On November 6th 2011, Asamoah Gyan received an award for the Best
African Sports Personality from the charity organisation, Ghana UK Based
Achievement (GUBA) Awards for his outstanding sporting achievements as a
Ghanaian based in the UK.
It was a very competitive category as the Black Stars striker beat the likes of
Ivorians Yaya Toure and Didier Drogba and Peter Odemwengie of Nigeria to
clinch the title.
“I am very thankful to all the fans who voted for me – I really appreciate this
and still can’t believe it”
At the South Africa World Cup Finals, 2010, the 25-year-old grabbed the
world's attention scoring three spectacular goals during the Ghana Black
Stars progression into the quarter-finals. The World Cup boosted his career as
he left French side Rennes to become Sunderland's record signing at £13m.
Currently Gyan is on season-long stint at United Arab Emirates club Al-Ain.
Former Sunderland, now QPR, player Anton Ferdinand and Aisha Hughton
from Sky Sport News presented Gyan with the Award:
Anton Ferdinand was the first to congratulate his ex team mate as he said: “its
an honour to present this award to Asamoah, it is thoroughly deserved."
The GUBA awards are there to show that there is a lot of positivity in our
community. Other award winners were Andy Ansah – Best Entrepreneur, Lady
Gifty Tetteh - Best Professional and Neptizzle for best club DJ.NOTES TO
