He is wrong, during the time that he was playing for Nigeria, he enjoyed to be called the "Giants" of Africa, but now that he is old he thinks otherwise. Nigeria, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Egypt etc have earned and deserve to be called "Giants" just like Brazil, Germany, France, England, etc. We are even one of the Giants of world football, being ranked in the top 30, we have grown and should be proud of our hard work and that should motivate us to do well in all fronts of our effort to build our nations.

I totally disagreed to what General Okacha was saying. Being consistent does not necessary means you should always win. When it comes to team building and international encounters, we are always available.
Look, when it comes to consistency, Cameroun came to international scene and vanished just like that. Then came Senegal, what happened to them after their tremendous displayed at the Fifa world cup, vanished as if they never existed. And Nigeria with 170 million population whose supposed to dominate the entire African soccer could not provide CONSISTENT talented players to keep them on the international scene.
But look at Ghana, always present at African cup of nations as compare to Senegal, Cameroun, Egypt and others. Though the cup has eluded us for a long time, but becoming 2nd, 3rd and 4th in African stage wasn't bad than not even able to qualify to participate. Two straight in the world cup and yet still second in our group stages.
Ghana the African Soccer Giant has never eluded from us simply because we are Persistence and Consistence in every soccer activities in Africa!

KojoLee, I agree with you. Being a giant is not defined by how often you win trophies, it is about how consistent you are at being among the best 3 to 5 national teams in Africa. In that regard Ghana has been very consistent. Our consistency does not end with the seniors, we have proven ourselves in the junior level and even in women's football. In the years that we have not won the cup how often have placed 2nd, 3rd or even 4th? We never drop out of the top for more than a year, we always bounce back quickly, that is the hallmark of a giant.

"Despite both sides offering memorable performances at the world stage at the FIFA World Cup, the former Nigeria captain insists the real glory lies in winning titles." Although I still consider Ghana and Naija among the great giant of African football. He is correct, the most glory is in titles. and Ghana needs to step up its winning game, and get some titles. We can no longer be content with just trying our best. Inshallah Ghana can do better, it must do better.

I agree with Okocha.Point of correction, nigeria had won the nations cup thrice : 1980, 1994 and 2013, as well as the olympic gold medal in football in 1996. However, nigeria has not been consistent in some cases whilst it was robbed up of the cup twice against cameroun, one instance was the nations cup in 2000 when a good penalty kick against Cameroun by our own ikpeba was disallowed. The foregoing notwithstanding, both Ghana and Nigeria were the giants of Africa in football but are no longer such.Same for cameroun.

THIS FAT FOOL WAS DIGRACED WOEFULLY BY NIGERIA, AND STILL HE HASNT BEEN FIRED. MEANWHILE, WE HAVE PROVEN COACHES IN THE NAME OF MAXELL KONADU, OPEELE AVAILABLE TO TAKE OVER. THE GFA IS ALLERGIC TO CHANGE. THEY PREFER TO BE 2 YRS OLD KIDS CRAWLING AND GETTING BREASTFED AS THEY SHIT IN THEIR DIAPERS. UNTIL THE GFA PULLS THER PANTS UP AND MAKE ADULT DECISIONS, NON EMOTIONAL DECISIONS TO HELP PROGRESS GH SOCCER. GH WILL CONTINUE TO BE LAUGHING STOCK IN AFRICAN SOCCER. GH DIDNT WIN THOSE 4 AFCON BY PLAYING FAVORITISM. IT WAS ALL CAREFUL STRATEGY, INNOVATION, WILLINGNESS TO ACCEPT CHANGE AND HARDWORK. THIS PRESENT DAY GFA IS ONLY GOOD AT COOKING THE NUMBERS, AND STEALING MONEY AND COLLECTING BRIBES. LYING TO YOURSELF IS THE DUMBEST RULE IN THE BOOK. LIE TO OTHERS, BUT NOT YOURSELF.

He is telling the truth and telling it like it is. We Ghanaians are having insomnia to the point that we allow patoitism and nationalistic tendencies to overide what actually needs to be done. No wonder we are not rebuilding. Instead of infusing the national team with younger legs regardless if we lose or win, we have been dependent on tired legs. Exposure brings experience and that's what top soccer nations are doing and these young lads are tested and ready for Brasil.
Why are we dealing with bluff who are not commited to the nation and want to be begged. We don't need a management who wouldn't genuinely use the true ages of players. It comes back to bite you in the ass.

Okocha is right, esp. on Ghana. Judging by our own standards set in the 60's, 70's through the mid 80's we are now a shadow of the soccer giant we used to be. Remember, this is the country that produced Abedi, three time Africa #1, Ibrahim Sunday, Africa #1, Opoku Nti, Africa #1, Robert Mensah Africa #1[goalkeeper], Ahmed Polo Africa #3[1977, deserved to be #1]. Ghana also used to boast of clubs like Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko in particular. We won the Nations cup in '63 and defended it in '65, we won it again in '78 and the other year following, and that was it. when was the last time any Ghanaian player came close to wining the top prize?[#1 footballer] Our club soccer may never attain past glories again because of globalization of the sport where The Chelseas and Man'cities will always keep the best talents, but for the international front we have no excuse.

Sorry dudes but this is a matter of grammar. There is a difference between being ''The giant'' and being ''A giant''. Among giants, there can only be one winner, but that does not mean the others are not giants. Being a footballing giant does not only depend on how recent you have been able to win a trophy, but also depends on your ability to win matches and the opponents you are able to beat as well as by what margin you beat them. This is how FIFA does its ranking. Okocha can't be smarter than FIFA, I guess.

Okocha's message is simply about the importance of humility one's journey to the top. In regards to the World Cup 2014 in Brazil, we must first qualify before thinking about topping our previous performances. It never ceases to amaze me how some of us Ghanaians cling unto past glories. Yes history does matter, because if you know where you are coming from, you at least have a basis to dream a future and make it a reality. Unfortunately, reality tells a different story and is history and future agnostic. The message reality tells us is that, our Black Stars of today bear no semblance to the dominant one of old. Moreover, present day Ghanaians have known nothing but feint victories and failure. There was a time when the mere mention of the Black Stars, was akin to sounding the death knell for teams they faced. Now it is not the case, as their play is highly uninspiring and lacks creativity. I cannot point to a single player on the current team who can change the face of the game. We do have along a way to go and the earlier we sit up and plan for a long term overhaul, the better we will be in the long run. Otherwise we will keep shifting blame, while ignoring the real issues.
