I can bet with you, the coach did not mean better players. But short of vocabulary put his statement to that position. Coach quickly come out and apologize to Sulley Muntary for a slip of thong and let sleeping dogs lie.
Though condoning bad behavior is not my wish and I will root for Sulley Muntary any day and time. I would not approve his behavior and all other players in the team have to understand. The coach has a right to inject and eject a player. If the player is not performing to coach game plan.

Nothing hurts Sulley more than your choice of words in the interview. Coach Appiah , it is your duty to let the 23 or 24 players know that they are all good and appreciated equally. However, you reserve the right to change any player as part of your tactical ingenuity or plan either to safe guard your lead on goals in a match or to add more fire power to the attacking force or adjust the strength in the midfield. We have several fielders and you cannot play all of them at the same time. You could have told Sulley that you needed him more in the next match against Zambia as an Ace player hence the substitution was needed. Henceforth, all players have to sign an agreement that you reserve the right without question to change any player based on your tactical plan in a match. They should either agree at home before throwing tantrums abroad. If you intend to give playing time to say 10 midfielders, it would be nice to inform all of them that there will be changes based on your tactical observation… No one should harbor ill-feelings because of changes, because they are all valued players called to represent Ghana. Personally, this is my observation. Sulley Muntari, Prince Boateng ,and the Ayews never like to be substituted in a match that they start unless they are injured. If you intend to substitute them in the future, keep them on the bench until they are needed to finish the match. You need to work more on scoring strategies….(Use FC Barcelona system from defense to midfield and finish with Span’s finishing strategies for goals. Good job!

Coaching is a management position, -- be it at the junior level, or at the national-team level. And as such, it's incumbent upon the coach to have a solid background in operations management, economics, organisational behavior, and the art of communication.

By definition: economics is the allocation of resources.

By definition: operations management is the maximization of allocated resources to produce the optimum output.

Creating the squad of the national team, falls under allocation of resources. It's very encouraging to know that Coach Kwesi Appiah has so far been very good in performing this task of his job.

Making a substitution during the course of a game is a question of operations management. This is the aspect of the coaching job Coach Kwesi Appiah is seemingly having problems with.

A coach with a good operations management background would not make a substitution on basis that a player he has benched is better than a player he picked to start the game.

This is a self-refuting argument, --i.e., a paradox at best, and an oxymoron at worst.

If the substitute is better than the player to be substituted, why then was he put on the bench in the first place? Beats me!

I don't think this is exactly what Coach Kwesi Appiah is saying.

I'm not implying that a coach has no reason to make substitutions. Barring an injury to a player the coach must convey to the player to be substituted that, he would like to substitute him because the team needs fresh legs on the field in order to maximize the chances of the team.

This is the professional way to communicate to the players.

Now that Coach Appiah has the job, he must endeavor to acquire the necessary education that the position requires.

May I suggest to him to study operation management, economics organizational behavior, and the art of communication.

Coach Appiah must endeavor to treat our players with respect, -- if he wants them to die for pennies, for our beloved Great Ghana.

May Lord Almighty continue to bless our beloved Great Ghana:

As a coach, you supposed to tell your players head of each half what the playing plan is, and then, also tell them incase this current plan did not work, this is what you the coach is going to do. If it is midfield this is the changes that will be made. Or if is defends this is what is going to happen, likewise incase is the attack.

You don't just tell them (your players) anything before the start of each half with absolutely no playing plan at all and then just jumped into conclusion that THERE ARE BETTER PLAYERS on the BENCH so you the coach is going to make a CHANGE.

Coach that taught is wrong and not professional at all.

Thus, Muntari did not need to hear these words in order to react the way he did. In order to calm everybody down, just say that this was just a poor choice of words and leave it at that.

This is the kind of LACK OF KNOW HOW by LOCAL coaches which typically affects a national teams.

As a coach, you supposed to tell your players head of each half what the playing plan is, and then, also tell them incase this current plan did not work, this is what you the coach is going to do. If it is midfield this is the changes that will be made. Or if is defends this is what is going to happen, likewise incase is the attack.

You don't just tell them (your players) anything before the start of each half with absolutely no playing plan at all and then just jumped into conclusion that THERE ARE BETTER PLAYERS on the BENCH so you the coach is going to make a CHANGE.

Coach that thought is wrong and not professional at all.
Mind you the CALLED UP PLAYERS are BETTER PLAYERS.

Whether Akwasi said better players or not the real issue is this scenario would not have risen if Sulley had shown professionalism and accepted the coach's decision in good faith. Against Sudan in Kumasi, he wore the captain's arm band. But he never complained when he was substituted in that match. So why this attitude when substituted in this match? The problem is Sulley would have been less inclined to sulk when substituted at club level, whether at Milan, Inter, Portsmouth or Sunderland. Neither would he had done so if an European was handling the Black Stars. No wonder some Ghanaians prefer foreign coaches to handle the Black Stars because of this problem with indiscipline and unprofessionalism exhibited by some of our "super" stars. It's unfortunate, but Akwasi Appiah must read the riot act to any player no matter their ability if they show any acts of indiscipline or unprofessionalism. Unprofessionalism and lack of discipline can be major contributing facts in undermining the success of a football team.

How he deals with Sulley's disciplinary problem will indicate how mature he is getting as a Head coach of the Black Stars. Despite his indiscretions, I still think Sulley has a lot to offer the Black Stars. And at this critical moment when we face 3 tough matches (if we are able to top our group)to ensure qualification to Brazil, all our resources are needed. So he must be allowed back if he accepts his behaviour was unacceptable because he is a very talented and skillful player. Greetings!

A player got subbed during a game by his coach and he throw tantrums! That's absolute baloney!! Egypt's player,Mido pulled the same crap in a game when he was subbed and we all know how long Coach Shehata banned him from the team. As a senior player in the team, Sulley has really disappointed big time and I think Coach Appiah also goofed with his choice of words on the situation!

I really love and admire Sulley no doubt he is one of the best and dedicated Ghana has but on this one he really went overboard.He knows quiet well that that is part of the game because a coach and his technical staff read the game at various timee from the bench and sometimes decide to come up with a new game plan and sometimes may need a different player at that moment they think fits to that game plan or sometimes coaches may want to rest their best player for some reason or sometimes they just want to give other players on the bench some playing time to allow them to also get used to the other players they will be playing with along the line if they make it to the WC or may want to watch their current perfgormances etc.So substituting a player does not mean that player is not a good player and this our own Muntare knows better than that.How on earth will anybody in Ghana ever think that our Muntare,Gyan,Essien,Dede,Agyemang Badu,A.Asamoah,Atsu,Boye,Johnatan etc are not good players.We should sometimes relise that not all days or times are good for every player.Some days a best player may be even good in a first half but things may turn south during the second half or the other team may have piled defenders on a particular player at sometime in point during the game.So there are several scenerios that will triger a coach and his tech.team to make changes or adjustments sometimes before or during a game.So it should never cross Muntare's mind otherwise.We know Muntare is a fighter and very dedicated who always wants to win badly.Now this piece goes to our news men they should find the right headings and words for such situations because using the wrong wording can trigger discourse and send the wrong message.Our coach and tech,team should also learn better communication skills because using the wrong words will have bad rams.Anyway which ever the case is the coach all players know is always in-charge.Players and coaches should always be mindful of media men they long for such words and situatios to sell their papers because it is business as usual.

For those saying Appiah chose the wrong word 'BETTER', they should know that it is true. Appiah meant what he said. To him, Sulley Muntari is less a player to Agyeman Badu; a sad conclusion by a coach who is shrouded with problems with players. Are we now to say what the Ayews stood on to go on premature retirement is an absolute truth and that there is some sort of cronyisms, tribalism and favoritism in the handling of the Black Stars by Appiah? The answers are beginning to come out. If he Appiah does not know, players like Sulley bring great results to a team; the reason AC Milan refuses to let him go. Only a poor and an inexperience coach like Appiah is now showing us he is, would see otherwise. If he is lucky to be given the job, he should know the job is not for him, his family or kinsmen. He has to respect the players before, during and after every single game the same way he wants respect, as he has not proven to be a better coach either. Basking along the sidelines and shouting without reason is not the definition of coaching.
Muntari might have over reacted after the substitution, but Appiah during the interview justified Muntari's action. He should come out to apologize to Muntari for that comment passed against him if not the players now know how he thinks and would not like to be castigated when they begin showing they are better than others in the same Black Stars team.

We had this ugly incidence rear its head with Dede some time back. Does it mean that our so called " stars " cannot be substituted. Hasn't Sulley been captaining the team with Gyan? What example is he setting for the others? Would he have shown such gross disrespect if it was an expatriate coach in charge? And will the GFA, and the ministry of health and the president come in to solve this issue or will the coaching staff be allowed to take the neccarsary punitive action? Whiles some are talking about oneness and building a team, what use is the team without discipline? A word to a wise is " in the north" ENOUGH OF THIS FOLLY!!!!!

A player should always respect a coach's decisions. The coach may sacrifice a player for the sake of the team, and this may not have anything to do with how well the player is performing.

Appiah was bound to make changes at that stage of the game to bring in fresh legs to protect our slender lead.

It worked as we got a second goal to seal the result.

We need unity in the Black Stars and to rebuild the strong team spirit which has served us so well in the past.

The main issue here is whether players[no matter their skill and ego] would discipline and subordinate themselves under whatever coach they have.Yesterday one player pulled his finger in the coach's face, because, the coach to dared substitute to him. Today, Muntari, a seasoned player, openly shows disgust to the coach, and, even angrily demands explanation, because, he was substituted.

So, why is the coach the coach at all? These are acts of indiscipline and insubordination, which must not be tolerated. If Coach Appiah and the Blacks Stars are to succeed, these acts of disrespect must stop. A coach is like a teacher. If a teacher loses CONTROL of his class, what follows are chaos and failure. Do we need parents to enter the classroom to talk to their wards to obey the teacher? Students must be made to obey the teacher, just as players must obey the coach. We do not need the President to step in and cool off Sulley, do we?

The emphasis is not on the quality of players involved as many may understand but on the result of the game-plan. When a player is substituted in situations like this, it can be disturbing because every player goes on the field with the expectation of playing for 90 minutes.
We all have temper and I do not think this should be used as a platform to compare player-performance. Let us understand two things:
English language can be confusing some times;
The coach has a game-plan to follow at any given time.
Remember, Unity is Strength and we should be working towards that in all spheres of life and Ghana would be a great nation!
