Toppmöller became coach of Hamburger SV on 23 October 2003. However, after the team fell to last place in the league, and Toppmöller used strange tactics, formations and out of position players (such as midfielder Sergej Barbarez in defence), he was sacked on 17 October 2004.
On 1 February 2006 Toppmöller became national coach of the Georgia national football team, with Ralf Minge as assistant coach. He was dismissed on 1 April 2008.

they are not up to the standard of national team handlers. they were all ex footballers turned to coaches. they are not coaches by profession from the scratch where they can be tolerated. during their playing days they could not merit a call up into the blackstars. we have other ex blackstars players turned coaches or technical men still going strong. the gfa can choose from joseph carr or simon addo as goal keepers trainer, joe addo, wilie klutse etc as team manager, and a host of others as assistant coaches

I know Ghana have got one foot firmly on the plane to Brazil. But it is dangerous to create the impression that we are there already notwithstanding the fact that the second leg is yet to be played. I think it would have been proper if the phrase "if we qualify" is used to assert that the status quo regarding the head coach will remain at the helm of affairs. In football, anything can happen and without being too pessimistic, we don't have to create the impression that we are already there to make Ghanaians and more especially the players relax and become complacent for the second leg. For me the tie is not over until after November 19th. So let's be humble and finish the job in Cairo or wherever before we start to count our chickens.
