End up without jobs. You went to afcon and failed miserably with these same way of doing things. You have taken players who are either not the best for the position. Or players who are not natural ones for that particular position. This is why we end up suffering. Square pegs in round holes. Kasa, afful, Opare and nkum are NOT natural leftbacks. A natural positioned player is one who is experienced in playing a particular position on the field, consistently! Take note of the words consistent and experience! So, if you take a player who does not play consistently and is in experienced at a particular position to a tournament. What do you expect will happen, AA? Rely on juju or some divine help? Essien is not a central defender. Where is the height? To clear aerial balls? Every central back we know of like Alex, john Mensah, vorsah, Jerome boating, mikel obi, chellini of juve, thiago silva, john terry, is able to tackle and good aerially. They are able to read games and can spot where the danger will come from. Can today's essien do this consistently? No!...U better rely on rabiu. Kasa is the last option you wanna use as a leftback. At this point, I will use Opare and afful as leftback and nkum, boye as right backs. Save jonathan Mensah for emergency and pull rabiu to partner sumaila 4,5. AA, it will be in your best interest to take this advice.

Did you understand what Appiah said? He is not saying Essien is going to play in the central defence. He said Essien "can"; K Asamoah "can". What that means is, "if the sea dries," Essien can be a defender.

An e.g. When a game is going on and a defender gets injured, Essien can take that role till the coach brings a player to take over the defensive role. That does not mean he will start him in the next game as a defender.

AA knew of this long ago especially when Vorsah was injured and John Mensah match suspect,
There are other defenders he could have invited,,,,players of the u21 who did very well in the tournament as well as those who played at
AFCON .
You can experiment with Essien and Kwadwo Asamoah as regular players at defense unless there is the urgent need through injury or accumulation cards.
So . The coach did not think out any plan or strategy on defense? And pack only midfielders and strikers?

Take a team like Arsenal for e.g. The #2 plays his position, but when there is a problem anywhere in the defence or midfield, he can hold that position till help comes -- that's what Appiah means.

The last match Essien played as a "Defensive Cover" for Chelsea - he played so badly - and Chelsea were eliminated from a cup competition - against one of the lesser known clubs in British Football. Before that match he hadn't played in any Premier League match - so we were all expecting him to do well in the cup game. That was one of the last games he played for Chelsea; and some time after that he was sold to AC Milan. We all know his performance and how few matches he has played at Milan!

Let's not risk Essien in either Midfield or Defense. We love Michael but there are better options available.

Does anyone remember Agyeman-Badu's exploits in the finals of the Under-20 final match? He is a better option in Defense than Essien.

That brings me to why Schlupp was dropped - I'm sure many people have commented on him and said the goal scored by the Netherlands was his fault.

I beg to differ - that goal was not his fault. I have a recording of that match and I have watched it a few times. Here's what happened. Essien passed the ball to Adomah. Instead of Adomah passing the ball to Atsu - who was standing right by him and in a better position to receive the ball Adomah rather takes the ball to the corner - where 2 Netherlands defenders take the ball away from Adomah.

The Dutch then pass the ball over the Ghana midfield to Robben who beats a central defender and passes to Van Persie to score. At the time Schlupp was the last Defender - the Dutch had already beaten (1) Adomah - who did not track back to win the ball, (2) Essien and Rabiu who failed to mark Robben and Sneider (3) Inkoom - who failed to tackle Robben on the right. These players I have named were at fault and not Schlupp.

I'm not saying I'm the wisest person on this forum, however we must be careful how we apportion blame to players.

It is my humble opinion that Schlupp should NOT have been dropped - he played a fine game in Accra in the 6-1 win, next year he will potentially be playing in the Premier League - one of the best leagues in the world, and lastly we are going into a competition with only 6 Defenders and then we drop one more defender - that doesn't make sense. Adomah should have been dropped!!

I pray nobody gets injured before our opening match on July 16 - however if there is an injury Schlupp should be called back immediately. He is a way better DEFENSIVE COVER than Mr. Essien.

Dropping Schlupp under our current circumstances was one of the most stupid decisions this coach has taken. And yes, he had made quite a number of them. Why the GFA gave him the position is beyond reason but it is after under the bridge now.

While the new look required a tremendous amount of discipline among the U.S. players to execute and was a bit boring to watch in the first 30 minutes, it eventually led to repeated, numerous and dangerous counterattacks for the U.S.

I have never pretended to have any confidence in Appiah and he has never attempted to prove me wrong. He has been bungling all along and now on the eve of the tournament he has no designated lineup. With a defense where Inkoom is involved we don't expect to go anywhere. Opare is much better yet it is always Inkoom. He should have invited more defenders to choose from but he loaded the team with midfielders. Let him stew and he had better not fail.
