Malik was on the bench officially as Team Manager not Coach when Kotoko won the African cup in 1983. Ibrahim Sunday was Coach. It was after the tournament Malik undertook training as Coach in the UK. Working with Coach King Adjei Pele they took Kotoko to the final in 1992/3 but lost to Zamalek on penalties in Cairo

Limited but fair. For four years continuous he coached otherwise unsung Asfag Yennega to win the national league in Burkina Faso. Was made caretaker B. Faso coach. The outing was disastrous though. As technical director he oversaw Kano Pillars winning the Nigerian league and reaching a shocking finals in the African Cup series.

He is a good coach. Strict disciplinarian but he often needs a long time to bring his team to gel. He is NOT good as stand-in coach. Once his team come to gel after a long time of association, they become free scoring and very hard to beat. His disciplinarian attitude makes him often fall out with arrogant senior players but he is never afraid to bring in young players from the youth side. That is how players like Joe Debrah, Thomas Boakye, Isaac Kwakye, Sarfo Gyamfi rose from nowhere to fame.
