NIGERIA 3-1 GHANA: Falcons On Top In AWCON Clashes With Queens
23 NOV 2016
The Super Falcons of Nigeria will take on bitter rivals Black Queens of Ghana on Wednesday in their second group game at the 2016 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations in Cameroon.
Both the Falcons and Ghana got off to perfect starts to the tournament, beating Mali (6-0) and Kenya (3-1) respectively.
As the two giants of African women’s football take to the field on Wednesday, Completsportsnigeria.com’s JAMES AGBEREBI takes a look at how both teams have fared against each other in previous meetings at the tournament…
NIGERIA 2-0 GHANA (1998 AWCON: FINAL)
The Super Falcons won the maiden edition of the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations as hosts in 1998 after defeating rivals Black Queens of Ghana 2-0 in the final.
After demolishing Morocco 8-0, Congo DR 6-0 and Egypt 6-0 in the group stage, the Falcons faced Cameroon in the semi-final and also made light work of them, winning 6-0.
And in the final against Ghana, the Falcons had to dig deep to secure a 2-0 win and clinch their first-ever African title.
NIGERIA 2-2 GHANA (2000 AWCON: GROUP STAGE)
At the second edition of the AWCON in 2000 in South Africa, the Falcons faced Ghana in their first group game and were surprisingly held to a 2-2 draw.
The Falcons took a 2-0 lead but were pegged back by Ghana to make sure both teams shared the spoils.
Despite the opening day draw, the Falcons still went on to win the tournament as they beat hosts Banyana Banyana of South Africa 2-0 in the final which was abandoned towards the end due to crowd trouble.
GHANA 1-0 NIGERIA (2002 AWCON: GROUP STAGE)
The Black Queens of Ghana inflicted the Falcons’ first ever defeat at the AWCON following their 1-0 group stage win at the 2002 edition held in Nigeria.
Ghana finished top of the group ahead of the Falcons on nine points and went all the way to the final.
On their part, the Falcons finished second on six points and also progressed to the final where they faced Ghana and had the opportunity to avenge their group stage loss.
NIGERIA 2-0 GHANA (2002 AWCON: FINAL)
Following their group stage defeat to Ghana, the Falcons made amends in the final by emerging 2-0 victors against their rivals to claim their third straight African title.
It was the second time the Falcons would be getting the better of Ghana in the final after they came out tops at the maiden edition in 1998.
NIGERIA 1-0 GHANA (2006 AWCON: FINAL)
At the 2006 AWCON held in Delta State, Nigeria, for the the third time the Falcons beat Ghana in the final.
But the 2006 final was a keenly contested one as the Falcons could only edge a stubborn Ghanaian side 1-0.
It was the Falcons’ fifth continental title.
NIGERIA 1-1 GHANA (2008 AWCON, GROUP STAGE)
The last time the Falcons and Ghana faced each other was in the group stage of the 2008 AWCON hosted and won by Equatorial Guinea.
Both teams settled for a 1-1 draw but the Falcons went on to advance into the semi-finals while Ghana crashed out.
The Falcons finished third after losing 1-0 to Equatorial Guinea in the semi-finals.

@Kofi, Ghana will beat Nigeria 2-0? No problem. Wait until the match finishes before you start boasting. Recall that Nigeria has won all but 2 of the competitions whilst Ghana hasnt won any.
