The Ghana Police Service has been urged by President Nana Akufo-Addo to review its operating plans in order to stop protracted violence from happening again after elections.
Reports of disturbances following the general elections in 2024, including vandalism against the Electoral Commission's offices and public property, prompted his request.
Allegedly, National Democratic Congress (NDC) sympathizers were connected to the incidents.
On Sunday, December 22, 2024, the President spoke at the Presbyterian Church of Ghana's Bicentennial Anniversary launch at the Osu Castle and voiced concern about how such violence might affect Ghana's reputation as a democratic nation.
In order to quickly resolve tensions following the election, he pushed the police to put better procedures into place.
"I praised the security forces, particularly the police, for their efficient election monitoring that maintained the peace. However, I would want to request that police leadership examine its procedures that let post-election violence to persist for an excessive amount of time before it is contained," he said.
President Akufo-Addo further emphasized that unity and order are essential to Ghana's prosperity and that it is the joint duty of all Ghanaians to preserve the country's hard-won peace and democratic stability.
