Members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have been advised by Kingsley Adumattah Agyapong, commonly known as Wofa K, Chairman of the NPP's UK branch, to abstain from defending any politician who is accused of corruption that turns out to be genuine.
According to Wofa K, Ghanaians must stop supporting dishonest officials who face legal action for their unethical practices.
He pointed out that corruption is a disease that needs to be fought by everyone, which is why the state must be given the authority to deal with corrupt individuals in line with the law, regardless of their position.
Speaking on Rainbow Radio's "As it is in Ghana" program on 87.5FM Ghana and 92.4FM UK, he stated that he was in favour of prosecuting corrupt officials. He was reacting to President-elect John Dramani Mahama's plan to carry out Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL).
He would support the ORAL in order to target individuals who have looted the state, provided that it is not used as a witch hunt or as a form of persecution. He emphasized that, as was the case under former President John Agyekum Kufour, the ORAL should not be used as a means of intimidating former appointees.
He suggested that everyone who is accused of corruption should be dealt with legally and under the weight of solid evidence. He then advised NPP members not to stand up for anyone whose accusations of corruption turn out to be accurate.
"They should use Ghanaian laws, follow the proper procedure, and take them to court so that the court can decide what happens if it is true that some appointees are corrupt and the NDC does not intend to persecute them and use it as a political ploy. They should also have evidence to back up the corruption allegations." He advised Sir Richie, the host, that they should exercise due caution and make sure the accused would face consequences.
