Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo has been reappointed as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana by the Governing Council for a second four-year term that will begin in October 2025.
The university announced in a statement that after a thorough assessment of her leadership during her first term, a unanimous decision was made in a meeting on December 19, 2024.
Vice-Chancellors are appointed for a four-year term and are eligible for reappointment for a further term under Sections 13(2) and (26), respectively, of the University's Statutes. To ensure fairness and openness, the re-appointment procedure is identical to that of a new appointment.
First-term accomplishments
During his tenure, Professor Amfo has implemented innovative projects that have improved the academic and physical environment of the university. Modernizing classrooms, implementing the One-Student-One-Laptop (1S1L) program, and creating hotspot comfort zones on campuses are some of her major accomplishments.
She also created the Gender and Internship Policies and led the establishment of the Centre for Disability Studies and Advocacy (CEDSA).
Addressing the University's debt load, a legacy problem resulting from earlier litigation, was one of her historic initiatives.
Under her direction, the Legon Leadership Academy was established with the goal of promoting diversity, inclusivity, and academic performance.
Under her direction, the university flourished and achieved high ranks in a number of international indices, such as the AD Scientific Index, the Webometrics ranks, and the CWUR Global 2000 List. According to the Times Higher Education Sub-Saharan Africa University Rankings, the university performed exceptionally well in 2024.
Future-focused vision
Professor Amfo hopes to build on these successes and tackle enduring issues during her second term. Transformative Student Experience, Impactful Research, Commitment to Faculty and Staff, Engagement and Partnerships, and Sustainable Resource Mobilization and Stewardship are the five pillars of the University's 2024–2029 Strategic Plan, which she is concentrating on putting into action.
This ambitious "5-4-5 blueprint" lays forth strategic goals to deal with the changing higher education environment.
Pioneering leadership
Professor Amfo, the University of Ghana's first female vice chancellor, has been an advocate for digitalization and innovation.
A comprehensive digitalization program has been launched as part of her efforts to enhance the university experience for all parties involved.
Professor Amfo is actively involved in a number of prestigious organizations outside of her position at the university, such as the African Research Universities Alliance and the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Among other positions, she is Vice-Chair of ARUA and President of the Fédération Internationale des Langues et Littératures Modernes (FILLM).
Her academic accomplishments are as impressive; she holds a Bachelor of Arts in French and Linguistics from the University of Ghana and a PhD in Linguistics from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology.
Numerous honors have been given to her in recognition of her excellence, such as the Legacy of Gadia State Award (2023) and the Ghana Woman of the Year for Excellence in Education Award (2023).
