The Ghana Police Service has received praise from President Nana Akufo-Addo for the security measures put in place during the 2024 election.
He has, however, urged the leadership to reevaluate its operational plans in order to prevent another outbreak of violence following the election.
President Akufo-Addo has pushed for the establishment of prompt procedures to address these kinds of situations.
On Sunday, December 22, 2024, the President spoke at the bicentennial anniversary launch of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana at the Osu Castle.
President Akufo-Addo voiced his worry that violence following elections does not bode well for Ghana's democratic reputation.
"I praised the security forces, particularly the police, for their efficient election monitoring that maintained the peace.
But before it is brought under control, he said, "I would like to ask the leadership of the police to review its practices that allow post-election violence to linger for too long."
President Akufo-Addo also emphasized the necessity of working together to safeguard the country's democratic stability and hard-won peace.
Despite being largely calm, the 2024 election was tainted by attacks on several governmental institutions, looting, and destruction.
Supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), whose administration is scheduled to take office on January 7, 2025, were accused of being responsible for the occurrences.
In relation to the incidents, more than 100 individuals were taken into custody and charged.
