Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has commended the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, for his exceptional leadership in the 8th Parliament. Afenyo-Markin expressed his admiration for Bagbin's leadership style, which has prioritized the welfare of members.

Afenyo-Markin made these remarks on the floor of Parliament on Monday, December 17. He acknowledged that despite their disagreements, Bagbin's commitment to the well-being of members has been evident throughout his tenure.

The Majority Leader also praised Bagbin for empowering Parliament as an institution. He noted that Bagbin's experience as a member of the House has enabled him to make informed decisions that benefit the institution.

Afenyo-Markin expressed his desire to see Bagbin retained as Speaker in the 9th Parliament. He believes that Bagbin's continuity would ensure that the progress made in the 8th Parliament is sustained.

However, Afenyo-Markin acknowledged that the decision to retain or replace Bagbin lies with the National Democratic Congress. If the party decides to replace him, Afenyo-Markin emphasized the importance of selecting an existing member of the House.

Afenyo-Markin explained that having a Speaker who is familiar with the workings of the House is crucial. He noted that an outsider may not have the same level of understanding, which could hinder the smooth operation of the House.

The Majority Leader's comments were made during a sitting of Parliament held at the Accra International Conference Centre. The House is set to debate pending matters before the current Parliament's closure.

Afenyo-Markin's praise for Bagbin and his emphasis on the importance of having a Speaker who is familiar with the House highlight the significance of effective leadership in Parliament.
