GhanaWeb reports that Frank Agyekum, who represents former President John Agyekum Kufuor, has blamed the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) loss in the general elections of 2024 on the lack of leadership under President Akufo-Addo.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) defeated the NPP by a margin of almost 1.6 million votes, indicating a significant shift in Ghana's political landscape.
In an interview with JoyNews' AM Show, Mr. Agyekum talked about how the public's dissatisfaction with the party increased because some of its members appeared conceited, which turned off followers. Additionally, he chastised the party for pushing unpopular candidates into unpopular constituencies.
"The narrative demonstrates that things had been going wrong for some time, and the warning signs were obvious. We are here because we ignored the warnings and failed to address our issues," he stated.
Regarding who was in charge, Mr. Agyekum was straightforward, saying:
"It always ends with the leader—he has the final responsibility. He is commended in good times and held accountable in bad.
He called the parliamentary and presidential candidates chosen "far from perfect" and voiced his displeasure with the selection process.
"There were conflicts inside the party, there was haughtiness, and it appeared that the leaders were blind to the distress of the populace. "This disconnect between the leaders and the grassroots likely contributed to our significant defeat," he said.
