In Ayigya, in the Oforikrom Municipality of the Ashanti Region, a vengeful crowd violently attacked five people, including three immigration agents, causing injuries.
A two-story Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) building was invaded by a mob on the evening of Tuesday, November 26. The mob was purportedly led by an officer's neighbor.
Armed with machetes and other weapons, the attackers tried to burn the building and its residents alive.
A portion of the building was set on fire, according to witnesses, and the gang also took mobile phones and an unknown sum of money.
The attack is thought to have been the result of a long-running property dispute. According to reports, the neighbor, who asserts ownership of the building, has been pressuring the authorities to remove them. In spite of three different court decisions that favored the Ghana Immigration Service, the neighbor allegedly used violence and intimidation.
Seven people have been taken into custody in relation to the attack, including the main suspect, according to Citi News sources.
Some witnesses, speaking anonymously, provided their accounts of the incident, while the immigration agents involved declined to comment.
Due to ongoing hostilities between the parties, the property dispute is still being litigated.
