Former Obuasi East Constituency Member of Parliament Edward Ennin
Former Obuasi East Member of Parliament (MP) Edward Ennin has blamed President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo's incompetent leadership for the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) historic electoral loss.
One of the main reasons for the party's demise, according to Mr. Ennin, was the President's divisive policies and his disregard for the counsel of party leaders.
He voiced his annoyance at what he sees as the haughtiness of some party members and Akufo-Addo's dismissal of senior officials' concerns.
He said the President continued to make controversial policies that alienated the party's base in spite of strong opposition.
The former MP also charged that Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia's flagbearer leadership caused uncertainty among party members due to his campaign tactics.
Questioning Dr. Bawumia's qualifications, Mr. Ennin contended that his ascent within the party exacerbated tribal tensions among the grassroots.
"I now understand that Akufo-Addo's actions did not benefit the party in the slightest, if at all. For this loss, we should hold him accountable. There was confusion among the populace regarding the taxes and the flagbearer's campaign against your own programs. I was bewildered, too. When the NPP chose Bawumia as its flagbearer, they made a mistake. 2018 saw him join the party without a party card.
When Mr. Ennin accused other party executives of not standing up to the President, he spared no one.
He highlighted the National Chairman and the Chairman of the Council of Elders for renunciating their neutrality, saying that the majority of executives merely carried out directives without defending or defending the party.
The party's leadership structure needs to be completely reorganized, Mr. Ennin said, pointing out that only Justin Frimpong Kodua, the general secretary, had shown himself to be successful in recent years.
To aid in the party's reconstruction, he emphasized the importance of presenting a united front and urged the reunion of long-absent members such as Alan Kyerematen, Kwabena Agyapong, Hopeson Adorye, and others.
The former lawmaker also cautioned the NPP to focus on re-engaging the grassroots and punish incompetent executives.
All parliamentary candidates who did not win this year's elections should be prohibited from running in any internal elections, he said.
