Two killed during looting of fertilizer in Akomadan

Two people have been reported dead at Akomadan in the Offinso North constituency of the Ashanti Region in a suspected looting incident.

The incident happened on Monday morning [Dec 9, 2024].

The parliamentary candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Fred Kyei Asamoah is said to have purchased some bags of fertilizer with the intention of sharing it to farmers, especially members from the NPP and they were in storage at a warehouse at the cocoa station at Akomadan.

On Monday morning, some youth said to be supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) reportedly stormed the warehouse to loot the bags of fertilizer, with the explanation that they are now in charge, according to a report filed by local radio station reporter.

While there, some others, reportedly members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) moved in to stop the looting.

This degenerated and in the process one person was reportedly beaten to death.

The younger brother of the deceased, identified only as David in a retaliation stabbed two others.

One of them was stabbed in the head and the other in the abdomen.

They were both rushed to the A.M.E. Zion Hospital at Akomadan Afrancho for medical attention.

Later reports emerged that, one of the injured victims sent to the hospital has also died.

David, the person who reportedly stabbed the two went into hiding and when the police visited the scene, the youth protested and prevented the police from arrested the suspect named David.

The police called for reinforcement from Offinso and managed to arrest the suspect David amidst the firing of warning shots and tear gas.

During the incident, another person was hit and the youth attempted to go after the police officer they suspected fired the shot that hit the third person.

The police officer took refuge in a house and the youth surrounded the house.

This is part of a number of post election issues in relation to looting, vandalism and destruction of properties in some locations across the country.
