Illegal miners reportedly target Neung South Forest Reserve in Tarkwa District

Widespread reports indicate that unidentified illegal miners are planning to breach and mine within the Neung South Forest Reserve in the Tarkwa District of the Western Region. The development has since raised alarm among local residents and authorities.

Eyewitnesses in nearby communities reported spotting three excavator machines and a washing plant parked approximately 700 meters from the reserve. Residents allege that the illegal miners have erected barriers to prevent officials from accessing the reserve.

The illegal miners reportedly accuse government of negligence, claiming they failed to act when a member of their group was allegedly killed by concession guards employed by a legally recognised mining entity operating in the area.

Prior to the arrival of a prominent mining company, the area was reportedly dominated by illegal mining activities. However, the company has since established a security post, manned by concession guards, to secure its assigned portion of the reserve.

Tensions have escalated following a recent shooting incident involving the concession guards and the illegal miners. The conflict has reportedly resulted in the burning of a security post by unidentified individuals.

Adding to the volatile situation, eyewitness accounts report sightings of heavily armed men in camouflage military uniforms traveling in a Toyota pickup truck. The group was seen approximately 100 meters from the barricades and was observed speeding toward the reserve.

The presence of mining equipment and armed men near the Neung South Forest Reserve has heightened concerns about potential environmental destruction and violent clashes.

Local authorities and security agencies are being urged to intervene promptly to prevent further escalation and protect the integrity of the reserve.

Efforts to contact key representatives of government agencies for comments on the unfolding situation have so far been unsuccessful.
