Two people believed to be Nkonyas have been killed in renewed clashes between their ethnic group and age-old rivals, the Alavanyos in the Volta Region.

It is not clear what led to the renewed clashes but police say gunshots were fired from the Alavanyo side, according to soldiers who monitored the attack on the ground.

The incident took place despite a curfew on the area which was renewed on Wednesday.

Kpando Divisional Police Commander Superintendent Prosper Ahlijah said “two people were shot dead and two injured at Nkonya Ahenkro around 7 to 8’Oclock in the evening.”

“It was an attack from the Alavanyos,” he told Accra-based Joy FM on Thursday monring.

Asked how he could confirm that the perpetrators were Alavanyos, Supt. Ahlijah said: “The soldiers on the ground, they were monitoring events because the attack was coming from that direction.”

Meanwhile, Volta Regional Minister, Dr Archibald Letsa, says the Regional Security Coordinating Council intends holding an emergency meeting today, Thursday over the issue so as to ensure things do not get out of hand.

There is intense enmity between the two communities who have been fighting over a patch of land territory for almost a century.
