The Western Regional Secretary of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) Mr. Charles Bissue has alleged that the party would have won the 2016 polls by 2 million votes if not for some illegalities orchestrated by the previous administration.
Reacting to claims that the Akufo-Addo’s administration is illegitimate due to the description to the old register as a fraud, he said the party has consistently called for a new register hence it would be unwise for anyone to attack their integrity.
The NPP he said wants a credible register for an election that would be acceptable by all.
Mr. Bissue also stated that the claims that the NPP was manipulating the Electoral Commission (EC) to compile a register that will help them rig, is not only frivolous but a political joke.
‘’The EC is an independent body and as a party, it is not our duty to manipulate them. Our interest is to have a credible register. We cannot allow foreigners with National Health Insurance cards to register as voters. Ghana is a sovereign country and so, only Ghanaians must decide who, to lead them.’’
The presidential staffer rubbished suggestions of mayhem and chaos saying, ‘’there will be no mayhem or chaos, the registration exercise will be peaceful’’.
He added: ‘’I hear people saying the same register won us the 2016 election so we should accept it. It is a no for the NPP. The votes we garnered were not enough. We should have won by 2 million votes if not for some machinations that went on. This is the reason why we are calling for a new register.’’
He revealed the compilation of the new register will expose the agenda by the opposition parties opposing the exercise.
Mr. Charles Bissue asked the NPP supporters to join the exercise but desist from any form of unlawful acts that will affect the exercise.
‘’Let us be responsible as party members. The president we have today, believes in the rule of law and as such, we should behave ourselves during the registration exercise,’’ he concluded.
