President John Mahama has said the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) will not go into the 2016 elections with the intention of attacking opponents’ health status.

“Please, please, please” he implored party members at a rally in the Greater Accra on Monday that: “We are not going to campaign on anybody’s health. No,” he said.

“I pray that God grants all of us good health to be able to see the 2016 elections and our victory,” he said.

Mr Mahama deplored the situation in 2012 where Ghana’s biggest opposition party used Prof John Mills’ (late) health as a campaign issue.

“When Prof [Mills] was our candidate, I know our opponents used his health as a campaign matter, and Prof Mills told them that it was only God who knows anybody’s days on this earth.

“And several of those who used Prof Mills’ health preceded him to wherever, I know Prof went to Heaven but I don’t know where they went…” Mr Mahama said.

Mr Mahama also advised the NPP, which he said had a violent antecedent, to purge its fold of the violence which has claimed two lives so far due to disagreements over national chairman Paul Afoko.

The Party’s Upper East Regional Chairman Adam Mahama died six months ago from an acid attack from a factional group within the NPP. Just recently, another party member died of multiple stab wounds during another NPP-on-NPP violence in Asawase.
