Former President John Dramani Mahama will run for the flag bearer slot of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Yamoah Ponkoh, a prominent member of the party in the Ashanti Region, has said.
According to Mr Ponkoh, the party and its executives are convinced that Mr Mahama is in the best person to recapture political power for the NDC.
So far, about four leading members of the NDC have launched their bid to contest in the flag bearer race.
They are former Majority Leader of Parliament, Alban Bagbin; former Rector of the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), Prof Joshua Alabi; Ekwow Spio-Garbrah, former Minister of Trade and Industry; and Mr Sylvester Mensah, former Chief Executive Officer of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA).
Mr Mahama is yet to declare whether he will contest or not. Addressing members of the NDC in Kumasi on Saturday, 28 April 2018, during the party’s Unity Walk, Mr Mahama said God will choose a leader for the party.
“God himself will choose someone to lead us. And I know that when that person is selected, by the grace of God, we will be victorious in the 2020 election,” he said.
Speaking on Ghana Yensom on Accra100.5FM on Monday, 30 April, Mr Ponkoh said: “We are bringing John Mahama in the 2020 elections. He is our best bet for the elections, and, so, the delegates have decided to bring him.”
“Ghanaians are disappointed at the Akufo-Addo-led government and they are yearning for the return of John Mahama,” he said.
