Security expert, Rtd Col. Festus Boahen Aboagye has slammed the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) over the balloting it conducted for the 2024 presidential election on September 20, 2024.
Speaking in an interview with JoyNews on Thursday, September 26, 2024, Col. Aboagye described the balloting for the 2024 election as a shame and a disgrace to the country.
The retired military officer was bemused by some of the things that transpired during the balloting, including political parties allegedly changing the ballot paper positions they drew.
“This balloting that took place to the shame of Ghana's democracy, that are those bald-headed that you thought were sensible in plain view of the camera, were passing ballot numbers. And they are not ashamed. They are not ashamed,” he said.
He added, “I mean, politics has become a joke. And I'm hearing that they're going to buy some of the positions for $5 million so that the numbers will change so that one party which had the number 8 position will no longer have it. Then they can use whatever election material.”
Col. Aboagye also criticised the Electoral Commission for its objection to an independent audit of the voter register, which he said was full of irregularities.
“... then you are creating a situation where we go to vote and, you know, the machination is going on about the electoral register. Without a register, a credible register, you don't have a credible election. And yet EC says that I will not agree for us to audit the register. But people think that, no, the register has been doctored, it's compromised. And we think that is a joke.”
