Cynthia Mamle Morrison, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Agona West in the Central Region, has been injuncted from contesting in the 2024 parliamentary election as an independent candidate.

This decision comes less than two months before the December 7, 2024, polls, following Morrison’s nomination to run as an independent after losing the NPP parliamentary primaries for the Agona West Constituency.

On Friday, October 11, 2024, the District Magistrate Court in Agona Swedru issued the order while hearing a challenge to Morrison’s candidature brought forth by three residents of Agona Swedru. The court also directed the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC), the second defendant in the case, to cease processing the MP’s nomination for the upcoming election.

“WHEREAS having come on the 11th day of September 2024 before HIS WORSHIP, VICTOR KUSI ESQUIRE, DISTRICT MAGISTRATE, Agona Swedru.

“AND UPON hearing AUSTIN KWARENA BRAND-POWERS, Counsel for the plaintiff herein, the Motion is Granted,” part of the court document cited by GhanaWeb reads.

It continued, “IT IS HEREBY ORDERED that the Motion for an interlocutory injunction restraining the 1st Defendant from holding herself as a parliamentary candidate and the 2nd Defendant from proceeding with the nomination of Cynthia Mamle Morrison as an Independent Parliamentary nominee until the matter is fully determined. IT IS FURTHER ORDERED that the Defendants should refrain from any actions regarding the nomination process for the position of Member of Parliament for Agona West Constituency concerning Cynthia Mamle Morrison pending the resolution of this case.”

The court has adjourned the case to October 15, 2024.

Cynthia Morrison was first elected as the MP for Agona West in 2016 on the NPP ticket and successfully retained her seat in the 2020 parliamentary election.

However, she lost the NPP primaries for the 2024 election to Christopher Arthur, the current NPP parliamentary candidate for the upcoming December 7 polls.

She cited ill-treatment by the current NPP establishment as her reason for seeking to run independently.
