2024 Elections: Tobinco flees debate in Anyaa-Sowutuom constituency

Emmanuel Adotey Allotey, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary candidate for Anyaa-Sowutuom Constituency in the Greater Accra Region, took center stage during a TV3 debate after his opponent from the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Emmanuel Tobbin, also known as Tobinco, was notably absent.

Mr. Tobbin chose not to attend the debate, citing difficulties with English, which he believed would hinder his participation.

In Tobbin's place, three representatives were sent: Dr. Emmanuel Lamptey, former Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Ga Central; current MCE Ambrose Tsegah; and immediate past Presiding Member George Darko.

Despite their presence, Mr. Tobbin was spotted near the debate venue at the Anyaa lorry park in Accra on Monday, observing the proceedings from a distance.

NDC’s Allotey was supported on stage by panelists including Edem Asamoah, the Constituency Secretary, and Deputy Communications Officers Ralph Apetorgbor and Patrick Acquah.

Tensions flared when Mr. Tobbin requested that the debate be conducted in Twi, a suggestion rejected by both the event organizer, TV3, and Mr. Allotey.

As an English-language station, TV3 maintained its standard language to ensure clarity and consistency.

The Community Manifesto debate is designed to provide candidates with a platform to present their policies and visions ahead of the 2024 general elections, bringing political discussions to the grassroots level and helping voters make informed decisions.

Mr. Allotey criticized Mr. Tobbin's absence as intentional and questioned his ability to represent Anyaa-Sowutuom effectively in Parliament.

He emphasized the need for a parliamentary representative who can debate, lobby, and communicate efficiently.

"A candidate who avoids a program designed to discuss our manifestos is unfit for public office. Why should the people of Anyaa-Sowutuom trust him with their vote?" Allotey asserted.

During the debate, Mr. Allotey outlined his key plans if elected, with a strong focus on improving education through enhanced school infrastructure and resources, upgrading healthcare facilities, and creating job opportunities for youth through vocational training and support for local businesses.

"My vision is to make Anyaa-Sowutuom a model constituency where every resident can thrive," Mr. Allotey declared.

He also pledged to address the constituency’s poor road network, vowing to collaborate with relevant authorities to improve transportation and stimulate local commerce.

"The state of our roads is a significant concern. It affects daily commutes and business operations. I will prioritize road development to boost connectivity and economic activity," he added.

Attendees at the event expressed their views on Mr. Tobbin's absence.

Businessman Wisdom Desouza Boateng expressed disappointment, stating, "We need leaders who are willing to engage directly with us and discuss their plans."

Elizabeth Tetteh, a resident, questioned Mr. Tobbin's ability to represent the constituency on a national level, asking, "If Mr. Tobbin can't handle a debate in English, how will he represent us on the floor of Parliament where English is essential?"
