Three hundred and six (306) people were killed in 1,791 road crashes that occurred in the Ashanti Region, last year.

Mr Thomas Bismark Boakye, Regional Director of National Road Safety Commission, said an additional 2,173 others, suffered various forms of injury.

Speaking to Ghana News Agency in Kumasi, he said 82 of the deaths happened in the first three months (first quarter) of the year.

The second quarter saw 90 killed, with the death toll for the third standing at 53 and 81 for the last quarter.

Out of the total accidents recorded, 352, involved pedestrian knockdowns, a figure, he said was disturbingly high.

Mr Boakye said the Commission had stepped up road safety education and enforcement to stop the carnage on the roads.

He called for drivers to respect traffic rules and regulations and make sure that their vehicles were regularly serviced.

Mr Boakye warned that offenders would be brought to justice.
