Soldiers clash with small-scale miners causing death of 8 persons
A deadly clash between small-scale miners and military officers guarding AngloGold Ashanti Mines in the Ashanti Region has reportedly resulted in the deaths of 8 people.
Several reports suggest that the tragic incident took place last night, January 18, 2025, leaving others injured and properties destroyed by fire.
The motive behind the attack remains unclear. Soldiers guarding the facility responded with gunfire, leading to the deaths of over eight miners, myjoyonline.com reports.
An eyewitness told myjoyonline.com that the small scale-miners besieged the mine at midnight fully armed and immediately opened fire, leaving scores dead and others injured.
Following the clash, agitated members of the small-scale miners have taken to the streets, vandalising property and burning tires.
Four vehicles, including buses, have reportedly been torched, further heightening fears among residents.
