The Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central, Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A Plus, has threatened to formally summon the Ghana Police Service to Parliament to provide updates on the investigation into the murder of a Ghanaian investigative journalist, Ahmed Suale.
In a post shared on his X page on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, he detailed his previous involvement with the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) in 2024 where he provided information regarding the murder.
“Last year, I was invited to the CID headquarters to provide information regarding the murder of Ahmed Suale. During the meeting, I identified a high-profile minister from the previous government who was allegedly involved in contracting assailants to carry out the crime. I also disclosed my source, a highly credible one, in the presence of the CID director," he noted.
He emphasised the need for the Criminal Investigations Department (CID)to update the public on the investigation's progress, urging for clarification on whether additional time is required.
“It is critical that the CID director updates the public on the progress of the investigation and indicates with justification whether additional time is required," he noted.
He also expressed concern that the case appears to have been sidelined.
"At this point, it appears the matter has been sidelined. If no update is provided within 48 hours, I will invoke my authority as a Member of Parliament to formally summon the Ghana Police Service to brief Parliament on this case. Should that fail, I will utilise my Facebook and other social media platforms to update the nation on what I know about the matter which shall include the name of the alleged perpetrator," he added.
Following his claim of knowing the killers of Ahmed Suale, the police invited him to assist in the ongoing investigation into the death.
In a statement released on July 15, 2024, the police said that the information he provided would help the investigative team make significant progress in the investigation.
“The Ghana Police Service has today, July 15, 2024, invited Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as (A Plus) to assist the Police's ongoing investigation into the death of Ahmed Suale, following his recent claims on social media that he has some information regarding the case,” the statement said.
The police further clarified that a Cold Case Unit, established in October 2021, under the Criminal Investigations Department of the Ghana Police Service, has been actively engaging with the deceased’s family and working closely to identify the culprits.
“The Cold Case Unit established in October 2021, under the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service to handle cases of this nature has been working on the investigation into the case and closely engaging with the deceased’s family.
“The Police is therefore pleased that Mr. Kwame Asare Obeng (A Plus) has made an indication that he has some information that could assist the ongoing investigation, and he has been invited accordingly,” parts of the statement clarified.
On January 16, 2019, Ahmed Suale was shot dead near his home at Madina in the Greater Accra Region.
No arrests have been made by the police, six years after his death.
