A passenger train travelling from Tema to Accra derailed at Avenor in Accra on Thursday morning May 21, 2026 after colliding with stray cattle that wandered onto the railway line, leaving commuters stranded.
According to a report by graphic.com.gh on May 21, 2026, the incident occurred around 7:30 am shortly after the train departed Avenor Station en route to Odaw Station on the Tema–Accra railway line.
The report indicated that two cows strayed onto the tracks and were struck by the moving train, leading to the derailment of the carriages.

“The two cattle strayed onto the railway line and were struck by the moving train, causing the carriages to derail,” the report said.
Following the accident, train services on the route were suspended as passengers were asked to disembark for safety reasons.
The disruption temporarily left several commuters stranded and unable to continue their journey.
The incident has renewed concerns over the growing problem of stray animals and encroachment along sections of the Accra–Tema railway corridor.
