Chaos broke out at a funeral at Obuasi on Saturday, November 29, 2025, when Adansi Dompoasehene, Nana Kwabena Ponko, was shot in what is believed to be an assassination attempt.

According to a report by 3news.com dated November 30, 2025, the incident happened during the final funeral rites for the late mother of the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Obuasi West, Faustilove Kannin.

The solemn atmosphere of the gathering was shattered when gunfire erupted, causing panic among the attendees.

"The scene was one of total disbelief and panic. A respected leader was attacked at an event meant to mourn the dead," said sympathisers and mourners at the scene, the report indicated.

The respected traditional leader was reportedly targeted while seated at the ceremony.

Quick action by attendees and security personnel at the scene led to the immediate arrest of the suspected attacker, identified as Nana Yaw Dankwa, a 30-year-old man, while emergency responders quickly transported Nana Kwabena Ponko to the Obuasi Government Hospital for urgent medical treatment.

The suspect was handed over to the Ghana Police Service and has since been taken into custody at the local police station for processing and questioning.

Although authorities have not yet issued an official statement about the chief's condition, initial reports indicate he was stabilised upon arrival at the hospital, and the swift arrest is expected to play a key role in the ongoing investigation to uncover the motive behind this brazen daylight attack.

The Obuasi community is now in shock and concern, eagerly awaiting further updates on the Dompoasehene's recovery.

Police officials have cordoned off the area and are continuing their investigation into the shooting, the report stressed.
