Majority Leader, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, has expressed strong disagreement with Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin's decision to adjourn Parliament sine die.

According to him, the leaders will immediately meet the caucus to get the necessary consent of the members to procure their signatures to recall the House per the law.

Speaking after the adjournment of the House, Afenyo-Markin said, "I do not think that the adjournment and the reopening of Parliament is purely administrative. It is always a decision of both sides of the House, in consultation with Mr. Speaker. Upon this agreement, an administrative legal process will trigger the necessary procedure to recall, reopen, and all," Afenyo-Markin stated.

He elaborated on the incident, saying, "I was in the chamber, and I called for the motion regarding the $250 million facility from the World Bank. I stepped out to meet Ato Forson over the vetting of the Supreme Court nominee, as I did not want a repeated banter. While we were discussing and monitoring proceedings, we sadly realized the Speaker was adjourning sine die. Surprisingly, he did not give his closing remarks, nor did he allow leaders to make remarks."

Afenyo-Markin emphasized the Majority's disagreement with the unilateral decision.

"We vehemently disagree with the unilateral decision to adjourn the house sine die. We will immediately meet our caucus to get the necessary consent of the members to procure their signatures to recall the House per the law. This is democracy, and we have to use the tools of democracy."

The Speaker adjourned Parliament sine die on July 30, 2024.

This decision followed an earlier communication last week indicating that the House will be adjourning.

However, in their business statement for the week, the Majority indicated that the House would rather adjourn on Friday, August 2, 2024.
