Ahwiaa to get police station after bloody clashes

The Kwabre East District Security Council has resolved to establish a police station at Ahwiaa in the Kwabre East district of the Ashanti region as part of measures to find a lasting solution to the clashes that sparked between some Asante youth and Zongo youth in the town on Saturday, 3 February.

The council has also resolved to maintain the joint military and police personnel in the town until the conflict is resolved.

The District Chief Executive (DCE) for the area who doubles as the chairman of the council, Nana Osei Assibey Bonsu told Adehye FM's Elisha Adarkwah on Monday, 5 February 2018, after a DISEC meeting restoring peace in the area.

He indicated that all the stakeholders including chiefs of both factions at Ahwiaa will also be invited to dialogue with them to find a lasting solution to the conflict.

"DISEC resolved that we’ll still maintain the police presence over there because we don't know what will happen if we take the police away, so, they will continue to be there untill the situation improves. Tomorrow, we are engaging all the stakeholders, the Zongo chiefs, the chief Imam, the Ahwiaahene, the Anyinamhene, the assembly members and all those who matter to find a solution to the conflict," he said.

"We are also going to put-up a police station over there. We are calling on the regional police commander to bring his men to take over the police station, so that the police will be closer to the people to avoid a situation where this matter will come up again," he indicated.

Nana Assibey, said the assembly has already put-up a structure at Ahwiaa and have decided that police personnel will be posted in to make sure such conflicts do not occur again.

Dozens were injured on Saturday after some Zongo youth and residents of Ahwiaa were involved in bloody clashes.

The fight occurred in the early hours with the factions attacking each other with machetes, broken bottles and other weapons after the town folks had prevented the Zongo youth from participating in a burial and funeral rites of a deceased lady.

Calm has since returned to the town while the joint military and police personnel are still at the scene to make sure there is peace.
