Chairman of the National Peace Council, Most Reverend Prof. Emmanuel Asante, has called on the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and its flagbearer to demonstrate that they truly understand the meaning of democracy even as they dispute the results of the just ended 2012 elections.

He said the New Patriotic Party (NPP) must not do anything to spark chaos while seeking justice over alleged electoral fraud. President John Mahama took 50.70% of the vote while the opposition leader won 47.74%, and the NPP has refused to concede defeat, insisting the poll was rigged.

The party, which has over the years congratulated itself for contributing immensely to Ghana’s democratic dispensation, has alluded to the possibility of challenging the results in court.

Speaking on Joy News’ Election Headquaters Monday, Rev. Asante noted that while it is important for the opposition party to seek justice, it is imperative that they simultaneously seek peace.

This, according to Rev. Asante, will clearly demonstrate to Ghanaians that the NPP's commitment to peace is more than just talk.

He also commended Ghanaians for comporting themselves admirably during the polls.

He believed that while there are a few citizens who like to stir up trouble, about 99.5 percent of Ghanaians are “peace-loving people”.

Throughout the electoral process, Rev. Asante said, “Ghanaians have proven to the world that they are peace-loving.”
