National Chairman of the Convention People’s Party Prof. Edmund Delle has indicated that President Akufo-Addo is to be held responsible for the high spate of corruption scandals in the various sectors of the country.

According to him, the President, being the final gatekeeper of the economy and essentially government has the mandate of overseeing everything that happens in the various institutions.

“I lead an organization, and if there’s corruption or anything of that sort it means the leader is to take responsibility…. Anything happening to the Convention People’s Party I cannot say it is because… no I’m the leader and I always tell the central committee members and all party members. Any problem in the CPP even if I’m not personally involved, but you’re the leader. You should be able to know what is happening… “He stressed.

Despite admitting that it was not an easy venture, Prof. Delle posited that leadership required character and tenacity to ‘uproot’ corrupt individuals within the administration. He however lamented that nepotism and protectionism had engulfed Ghanaian politics and as a result leaders have not been able to fight the corruption canker.

“…A leader with character, you cannot be shaken. You’re prepared to deal with, uproot any person even if it’s your father or mother who does something who does something which is corrupt you let the person go. But there’s a lot of protectionism in politics…” He added

The National Chairman with over fifty years of political experience advised that the fight against corruption has to start from within.

He bemoaned the dominancy of the NPP and NDC, stating that Ghanaians had been left with no choice at the mercy of the both parties who over the years have been involved in countless corrupt activities.

“You can’t blame Ghanaians, they have no choice. It’s NDC, NPP. So Ghanaians all-round the country if you talk to them, they say... CPP when are you people coming. Unite and come, we want at least to have an alternate choice. After all they fight among themselves, the two parties; who is more corrupt than the other… is that why we brought them to power. We brought them to power to see to the needs of the ordinary people.”

Prof. Edmund Delle was speaking to Ghanaweb.Com after the celebration of the Convention People’s Party’s 69th anniversary which was held at the party headquarters in Accra. The event was attended by the party’s council of elders and some party enthusiasts. Conspicuously missing however was 2016 flagbearer Ivor Greenstreet and daughter of Kwame Nkrumah, Samia.

Since its inception, the Akufo-Addo led government has come under fire for allegations of corrupt activities at various levels of the economy.

Many people have accused the President of practicing nepotism and his inability to deal with individuals at the center of corruption scandals.

The President himself however fired four heads of State Owned Enterprises but government has explained that they were not fired for wrong doing but part of a ‘development drive’.

The CPP Chairman’s critiques come in the wake of an explosive expose´ in the Ghana Football Association by investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas, resulting in the dissolution of the footballing body and the resignation of the GFA boss.
