As if history were repeating itself, the capital has once again been struck by a series of disasters, with floods, fire outbreaks, and building collapses reported in parts of the city on June 3, 2026.
Flooded areas
A heavy downpour accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms hit parts of Accra on Wednesday evening, June 3, 2026, leaving sections of the city heavily flooded, disrupting traffic flow, and affecting commuters in several areas.
Videos sighted by GhanaWeb on June 3, 2026, showed severe flooding in areas such as the Kaneshie Market, Ashaiman, parts of the Nkrumah Circle enclave, Pantang, and other surrounding communities.
The floodwaters also caused damage to properties, entering homes and submerging vehicles, resulting in huge losses.
Commuters were left stranded in heavy traffic in several areas, with some roads remaining waterlogged deep into the night.
Adenta Building Collapse
Another tragic incident that rocked Accra was the collapse of a two-storey apartment building near the Da Yesu Ase Supermarket at Adenta New Site during a heavy downpour on the evening of June 3, 2026.
According to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) Regional Fire Officer, ACFO Rashid Kwame, in an interview with the GNFS media team, the collapsed structure was a two-storey building.
He indicated that five people were trapped in the building, out of which four had been rescued.
Even though he did not categorically state that the fifth person was dead, he indicated that the firefighters, together with some personnel of the Ghana Armed Forces, were working to retrieve her body.
“There were five people who were trapped, but four have been rescued. Unfortunately, one person who is a female is still under the rubble, and efforts are being made by the men to retrieve the body,” he said.
The Regional Fire Officer explained that it was proving a little difficult to retrieve the woman because of where her body was trapped.
“She is in between two pillars, and the men are doing the chiselling… I’m hopeful that we will be able to retrieve her body,” he said.
He said the four people who were rescued had been transported to the 37 Military Hospital for medical attention.
He said that preliminary investigations showed that the building had a lot of issues, with residents saying that it was slanted.
He also said that residents confirmed that there was a manhole close to some of the pillars of the storey building, which was not ideal.
The fire officer who was taking the video indicated that a family of five, two females and three males, were the ones trapped in the collapsed building.
He stated that the woman whose body was still trapped was the mother of two of the people who were rescued. He added that the woman was 38 years old and had been identified as Margaret.
Fire Incident
Multiple shops were engulfed by fire at Accra Central around the Makola area, opposite the Central Police Station, on Wednesday, June 3, 2026.
