Allegation, denial of ‘training thugs’ not enough; probe it – PNC General Secretary

Acting General Secretary of the People’s National Convention, Jacob Amoako, is calling for immediate investigations into allegations that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is training thugs at Asutuare to cause confusion in the 2020 general elections.

Former President John Dramani Mahama alleged that the NPP was planning to wreak havoc in the 2020 elections.

At a meeting with the Ghana Journalists Association last week, Mahama claimed he has evidence that some NPP footsoldiers were being trained in batches at Asutuare in the Greater Accra Region in combat techniques among other military skills.

“If you lose an election and you believe that it was free and fair, you don’t cause confusion. But if you feel that you were cheated, then sometimes emotions can run high,” Mr Mahama who is leading the NDC into the next elections said.

Though the NPP has denied the allegations and demanded for evidence, Jacob Amoako believes a thorough investigation must be conducted to ascertain the truth or otherwise of the matter to bring finality to the issue.

“For the truth to prevail there must be an investigation. When these allegations are coming, it puts fear in the citizens and I think there should be some kind of investigations for us to arrive at the truth so that the fear of the citizens will be put off” he said.

“The investigations must be done in any level [so] that the citizens of Ghana to be rest assured that we will have a clean and fair election in 2020 and to avoid anything that will likely cause violence in the election” Mr Amoako added.

Mr Amoako underscored the need for an investigation because as it stands now, “what we have currently is the word of the accuser against the accused”.

He wants state institutions with some level of credibility to take up the investigations, saying “…any institution of the state capable of investigating this must take up the matter and provide report on their findings”.
