Amasaman roadside sellers seek government support amidst the Ofankor-Nsawam road construction

Hawkers and drivers plying the Amasaman route are lamenting the impact of the ongoing Ofankor-Nsawam road construction on their livelihoods.

The construction project, although intended to improve the road network, has significantly hindered their businesses.

According to the affected hawkers and drivers, the road construction has resulted in reduced foot traffic and accessibility issues, making it increasingly challenging for them to sustain their businesses.

In an appeal to the government, they expressed their distress and urged for support during this difficult period.

In an interview with GhanaWeb's videographer, Kwame Adzaho-Amenortor, the hawkers and drivers shared their concerns, hoping that the government would provide them with the necessary assistance to navigate the challenges posed by the road construction.

“We have suffered greatly due to the road construction and faced numerous challenges. Police officers frequently confiscate our goods, leaving us frustrated and without a place to sell.

"As citizens who will vote in the next election, we urge the government to address our situation. The police claim we cause traffic congestion and often seize our goods.

"As a single parent supporting two children in senior high school, I am struggling to make ends meet. The government should consider allocating a designated selling area for traders like us, who have been operating here for the past five years.

"Once the construction is complete, we fear we will have nowhere to go,” Gifty Woadzro, one of the sellers, said.

One commercial driver, Kwaku Frimpong, also added that “We support the ongoing construction, although the current traffic congestion is severe. The five-lane road will benefit commercial transport drivers and improve traffic flow, which we eagerly anticipate.

However, we face challenges such as road damage, which impacts our vehicles. We urge contractors to grade the unpaved roads to ensure smoother travel.”

The sellers and drivers are requesting temporary relocation assistance and financial aid to help sustain their businesses until the construction is completed.

The vendors emphasize that their livelihoods depend heavily on the daily sales they make along the roadside, and the current situation has put them in a precarious position.
