The Member of Parliament for Assin South, John Ntim Fordjuor, has called on President John Dramani Mahama to assent to the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill 2021 (Anti-LGBT bill) now that he has assumed office.
According to him, the president had initially made his intentions clear that he wouldn’t have hesitated to sign the bill if he were in office when it came up. He explained that now that he has the opportunity, he should do so.
He added that the MPs who were part of working on the bill would gather and present it to the president to sign.
He also alleged that Mahama’s campaign on the LGBT issue contributed to his victory.
“At the end of the 8th parliament, when we passed the Anti-LGBT bill, we couldn’t get the presidential assent.
“During that period, President Mahama used the opportunity to campaign, claiming that he would have signed the bill if he were president.
“So, we are reminding him that all the people who worked on the bill are still in parliament. Only one person lost the election, so we will replace him and send the bill to him to sign because he promised Ghanaians that he would sign without hesitation if he were president,” he said during an interview with Okay FM on January 8, 2024.
