Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, has denounced the recent conflict in Obuasi between the military and illegal miners over the AngloGold Ashanti concession, which claimed nine lives.

Speaking at the Manhyia Palace following a briefing on the incident by AngloGold Ashanti managers, the Asantehene expressed profound concern and dismay, emphasizing that a change in government should not be interpreted as a license for lawless behavior.

“Engaging in illegal mining should not be encouraged by anybody not even the government. A change in government should not give people the opportunity to misbehave.

“We live in a society where the law works, and I don’t think this government will let this happen,” myjoyonline.com quoted the Asantehene as saying.

The monarch of the Ashanti Kingdom made these remarks after a violent altercation between a group of unlicensed miners and soldiers at the AngloGold Ashanti concession in Obuasi.

The tragedy claimed nine lives, leaving many others injured.

The Asantehene urged the government to act swiftly to address the issue of illegal mining, which has become a significant concern.

Additionally, he called on the security forces to take proactive measures to uphold law and order and ensure that those involved in illegal activities are held accountable.
