The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II at the ceremony
The University of Cape Coast, (UCC) has conferred an honorary doctorate degree on the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, in recognition of his exceptional leadership and relentless efforts in peacebuilding, promoting unity and development in the country.
The honorary degree was presented to the Asantehene by renowned businessman and Chancellor of UCC, Sir Sam Jonah, during a special ceremony held on the university campus on Thursday, September 5, 2024, in a video shared by Royal Palace Multimedia.
Receiving the honorary doctorate, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II expressed gratitude to the University of Cape Coast and reiterated his dedication to promoting education, development, and unity in the country.
He stated, "Let me express my profound gratitude to the Chancellor, Chair members of the Council of this great institution for the honour bestowed on me this morning. It is an honour, which I accept with humility and proudly share with Nananom whose joint eforts have contributed to everything I have achieved.
He added, "There could not be a better place than to accept the honour here. The establishment of one institution may not come in the scheme of national development, but I would suggest that one of the many visionary acts of our first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, was the decision to establish a university to advance the cause of education, and there would not be an honour in hosting such a university than the city of Cape Coast."
The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Johnson Nyarko Boampong, praised the Asantehene for his vision and leadership, noting, "Many institutions in Africa have in the past awarded honorary degrees to traditional leaders for their contribution to their society.
"The University of Cape Coast has a rich tradition of rewarding excellence and achievements and has in the past awarded honorary degrees to distinguished individuals, many of whom have contributed to the advancement of society."
He added, "Today’s award ceremony will not be different, however, it will be the third time the University of Cape Coast has awarded traditional rulers with honorary degrees.
