BNI has turned Ghana into a jungle – Titus Glover

Member of Parliament for Tema East, Titus Glover, says the rate at which the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) is abusing the rights of Ghanaians is unacceptable.

He, therefore, wants President John Mahama to put them to order to prevent any eventuality.

In his view, the BNI has in the past few months turned Ghana into a jungle where they have succeeded in contributing to putting fear in the people.

Such a practice, he noted, has resulted in the Executive enjoying more protection by the State much to the detriment of the masses who dare to complain.

Speaking on TV 3’s News Day, Saturday, the legislator who is representing the people of Tema East on the ticket of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) said the state at which unknown people are threatening the lives of their fellow human beings with impunity attest to the state in which the BNI has turned the country into.

He was speaking on the alleged death threats on the lives of the flagbearer of the opposition NPP, Nana Addo-Dankwa Akufo-Addo and former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings by the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The Director of Operations of the National Democratic Party (NDP), Joseph Bediako, Monday, alleged that there had been some attempts by some people in the NDC to assassinate Mrs. Rawlings, who is also the founder of the opposition NDP party.

He said on two occasions, some people without giving reasons for their visit have insisted on meeting the former First Lady one-on-one but were denied that opportunity because their motives weren’t clear.

Head of security of Akufo-Addo, Captain (Rtd) Koda has also complained of alleged death threat on the life of the flagbearer of the NPP.

None of the cases has, however, been reported to the Police.

Glover commenting further said the two cases coupled with others are clear examples of what the BNI has contributed in turning Ghana into because people no longer trust them.

“The culture of impunity of killing is becoming too much in this country. Why do you have to end the life of your fellow human being? The issue about mistrust is the cause of this because as a state security agency, you have to give equal protection to everybody but when you go beyond protecting the Executive at the expense of other Ghanaians, it makes the mistrust so high”, he noted.

Deputy Minister of Trade and MP for Nanton, Murtala Mohammed who was also the show in a sharp rebuttal said he finds it difficult to believe the alleged death threats on the lives of the Akufo-Addo and the former First Lady when there is no evidence to support such claims.

“Whoever says Nana Addo’s life is under threat should provide evidence. It is unacceptable for people to make such public statements without providing any evidence”, he noted.

Nonetheless, he said if there is any evidence of a threat, the victims should report to the appropriate security agencies for action, noting that “the security of Kayayie’s is as important as the security of the President.”
