Cape Coast South Member of Parliament, Kweku George Ricketts-Hagan, has criticized Vice President and NPP flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, referring to him as a “theoretical economist” who has failed to live up to the expectations placed on him.

Speaking on GHOne TV‘s “State of Affairs,” Ricketts-Hagan argued that Dr. Bawumia was packaged as an economic savior, with his party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), touting him as the solution to Ghana’s economic woes.

However, Ricketts-Hagan claimed that Dr. Bawumia’s lack of practical experience has hindered his ability to effectively address the country’s economic challenges.

He stated that as an economist himself, he has been disappointed by Dr. Bawumia’s failure to translate his theoretical knowledge into tangible results.

Ricketts-Hagan recalled that Dr. Bawumia was not a traditional member of the NPP but was rather brought into the party and sold to Ghanaians as an economic expert.

According to him, this marketing effort was successful, at least initially, but Dr. Bawumia has ultimately failed to deliver on his promises.

“He came in and started propounding economic theories and giving lectures. As economists, those of us who understand the practical side of economics were watching closely. I’ve said this many times—I saw through him. He’s not a practitioner. He’s a theoretical economist, someone who spends most of his time in the classroom. They can tell you a good story, but when it comes to implementation, things don’t always go as planned.”
