Be advised; we can do worse – ECG workers tell gov’t

Workers of the state-power distributor, Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) are ending their three-hour demonstration declared in the regional and district offices of the ECG today with a call on government to heed to their advise on privatizing the utility company.

According to them, eventhough they’re practically ending their 3 hour strike today, the fight continues and will resist any attempt by the government to give out the State owned firm.

“So far as we’re concerned our position on the plan by government will not vary – The government should be advised, lest we’ll go every length to ensure it will stay the planned privatization, and as such we can do worse than this three hour demonstration. We are doing this all in the national interest and for the sake of Ghanaians.” some workers told Kasapa 102.5 FM Friday.

The Divisional Executive Committee of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) Senior and Junior Staff and members of the Public Utility and Workers Union (PUWU) are livid with government’s plan to give out the utility company to a private investor for a period of 25 years.

General Secretary of PUWU, Michael Adumatta Nyantakyi who addressed a Press conference before the strike said the decision by the government will not make ECG more profitable and efficient as being espoused by proponents of the sale of the state power distributor.

The ECG demonstration started Wednesday, August 24, 2016 from 8am to 11am daily to Friday 26th August amidst the flying of red flags in various Regional and district offices of the company.
