Former President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, has supported claims that the Ghanaian youth are into betting because there are no jobs.

Therefore, he does not see why the government would want to tax the youth on their wins when the government hasn’t provided them with jobs.

To him, taxes must not be placed on bets; rather, the government must look at providing the youth with jobs in order to better their lives before taxing their bet wins.

“My argument has been that we need not tax bets. These young people are unemployed, and when they get some 20 cedis, they stake their bets. They are into betting because they don’t have jobs, so we must not tax their bets,” he said on Sunrise FM in the Eastern Region.

He continued, “It is only when we have been able to provide the youth with jobs that we can tax bet wins to discourage the youth from engaging in it because it is not a good thing. But until then, bet wins must not be taxed. For now, when we come, we will take the betting tax off.”
