Borehole for University of Ghana

Accra, Jan. 8, GNA - An 11,500 dollar borehole was on Monday inaugurated at the University of Ghana (UG), Legon to ease the perennial water shortage facing the University.

The borehole, which would mainly benefit residents of Volta Hall, was sponsored by Ghanaian Peacekeeping Troops and the Ghanaian Community in Sierra-Leone, under the auspices of Dr Mrs Makowa Blay Adu-Gyamfi, Ghana's High Commissioner to that country.

Dr Adu-Gyamfi, who inaugurated the borehole, told the GNA that she used to be a resident of the Volta Hall and a member of the University Council and was, therefore, aware of the perennial water problem. She said; "when I took office as the High Commissioner of Sierra-Leone, the peacekeepers and residents association told me they had about 12,000 dollars available for any projects I would nominate and straight away I nominated the Legon water projects because the cost of that project fell within our means."

Dr Adu-Gyamfi urged other Ghanaians resident abroad to emulate the and the Ghanaian community in Sierra Leone and the peacekeepers and make provisions to improve on the social facilities in the various communities of Ghana.

Professor Clifford Nii Boi Tagoe, Vice Chancellor of the University, said the University, which now had a student population of about 30,000 and staff strength of 4,000 was compelled to share a meagre one million gallons of water from the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) with residents of Legon, Madina and Adenta in a day.

He said the borehole would go a long way to provide some relief for the University community.
