Bridge collapses at Agbogba Suncity after heavy rains

A bridge has collapsed at Agbogba Suncity, a suburb of Accra after heavy rains Saturday morning putting the lives of residents at risk.

A resident of the area, Nii Annerquaye Abbey in a Facebook post said the collapsed bridge which leads to his house divides Dome-Kwabenya from Madina constituencies and has been completely washed away cutting access to the community.

According to him, a philanthropist once volunteered to fix the road but the La Nkwatanang Assembly demanded the funds be given to them to fix it instead. This got the volunteer angry leaving the project without being worked on.

In the video recorded by him, some people are seen demanding money from residents to help them get access to the other side of the road through the rushing water.

On Monday, a female medical doctor identified as Aya Oppong lost her life during a downpour in Accra. The doctor, who was also a nursing mother, is said to have qualified as a medical officer recently and was waiting for her posting to do her housemanship.

The Hyundai Accent saloon car which was being driven by Dr Oppong, 33, was returning home from an evening church service when she got washed away by the flood waters at the Teshie Demo Bridge.

According to experts, Accra, which is in a low-lying area, experienced flooding annually mainly because of the haphazard construction of houses, especially on water courses, the poor drainage system and poor waste management challenges.



The city experienced its worst natural disaster on June 3, 2015, when torrential rains caused floods that brought Accra to its knees, with an unimaginable loss of lives and destruction of properties.

More than 150 fatalities were reported in the aftermath of the floods in a disaster that has been described as the worst in the country’s history.

However, Government is assuring Ghanaians that the incidents of floods in cities, particularly in Accra, will be reduced to the barest minimum as it takes firm steps to deal with the perennial problem.

According to the Deputy Works and Housing Minister, Eugene Boakye-Antwi, government has committed GHC200m funds to various projects across Accra and other parts of Ghana to solve the problem.
