Some residents of the Ketu South Constituency in the Volta Region have expressed mixed feelings about the performance of their Member of Parliament (MP), Abla Dzifa Gomashie.
Speaking on GhanaWeb’s Campaign Trail, most of the constituents indicated they were satisfied with the performance of the MP.
They, however, spelt out some of their challenges, including poor roads, increasing costs of living, lack of potable drinking water, extortion by border control officers, and unemployment, blaming them on the administration of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
One of the constituents - a woman, lamented bitterly about the exponential increase in the prices of food items.
“The cost of living has increased drastically. Previously, we used to give GH¢2 to our children for porridge, but now it has risen to GH¢5. When you have three or more children, how would you care for them?
“Life has become difficult for many of us. The prices of goods have skyrocketed and it’s becoming harder to earn money too… Nowadays, we are no longer able to cross the border to buy goods due to constant demand for money at the Aflao Border,” she lamented.
Another resident, who was also pleased with the MP’s performance, lamented about not having a constant supply of water for years.
He urged Dzifa Gomashie to work assiduously to resolve the issue because the lack of water in some of the communities is making life really difficult for a lot of constituents.
“There is a lot to be done in the constituency, especially the problem with water. The whole of Agbozome has not had a drop of water for nearly two years now. We are struggling with water issues. Some communities have water but the whole of Agbozome doesn’t have water; it has been a challenge.
“... the MP is doing well, she is trying. Considering that Mahama is not in power, we have the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia government but I think she is doing well. Overall, she is trying but with the water issue, she is not doing enough.”
One man who was not happy with the MP’s performance urged the constituents to vote for the New Patriotic Party in the 2024 poll.
He said that the Ketu South Constituency has had National Democratic Congress (NDC) MPs since the inception of the 4th Republic but it has not seen major developments.
“Our roads are not good, we think she should lobby for us. We know she is not responsible for road construction but she can lobby for us. Secondly, our market is also not good, when you enter the market, you will see that the sheds are very bad, she is not doing anything about these things and there are a lot of things I can mention that she is not doing,” he explained.
