Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, a leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has argued that the results of the 2020 general elections showed that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was more popular than his party, the NPP.

Speaking on ChannelOne’s "What The Papers Say" on June 6, 2024, Gabby stated that a careful analysis of the 2020 general election results indicated that the president had garnered more popularity than his party based on total votes.

"It’s true that a presidential candidate can be more popular than his or her party, or vice versa. If you examine the 2020 results and consider the NPP's popular votes—combining all their parliamentary and presidential votes—and even look at the constituencies the NPP won or lost, it appears that their presidential candidate was more popular than the party," he said.

"For example, in the Central Region, Akufo-Addo won, but their parliamentary candidates came second to the NDC. So, it is indeed possible for a party to be more popular than a presidential candidate," Gabby added.

His statement was in response to a recent poll by Prof. Smart Sarpong, an Associate Professor of Statistics, Research Design, and Data Management Consultant, and Director of Research and Innovation at Kumasi Technical University.

The poll placed Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the preferred candidate for the upcoming December 7, 2024, elections.

According to the poll's findings, while the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is the most popular political party, Dr. Bawumia leads in terms of presidential candidate popularity, putting him ahead of his main contender, former President John Dramani Mahama of the NDC.
