Convention Party has the men to run the country - Pratt

Mon, 7 Dec 1998 Source: --

Tamale(Northern Region), 7 Dec. '98 -- Mr Kwasi Pratt, a leading member of the Convention Party (CP) has said that the party has people with sterling qualities, "who are eager to free the country from the incompetent rule of the NDC (National Democratic Congress) and restore the respect and dignity of Ghanaians" Mr Pratt, who was speaking at a rally to climax the regional congress of the party at Tamale on Saturday, questioned "the political neutrality of the district assemblies when the district chief executives are spokesmen for the NDC", adding "we must insist on the neutrality of the chief executives if the district assemblies are to remain non-partisan". Dr Nasser Adam, a member of the National Interim Executive of the party denounced what he described as the depressing poverty level in the Northern Region, which, he said, has reduced the people to degrading standards of living. He said the NDC government's claims that remarkable improvement has been made in the economy was false since widespread deprivation exists. Dr Adam said the party will call for civil disobedience and other acts of mass protest if the 2000 elections are not conducted in a free and fair manner. A 16-member regional executive, under the chairmanship of Dr Abubakar Alhassan, a development consultant was elected by popular acclamation. Mr Paul Kwame Ayifli, the interim national vice-chairman of the Party asked the new regional executive to eschew selfish and other personal interests and strive to help safe the country from political and socio-economic collapse. Dr Kwesi Nduom, a national executive member, said CP will restore the economic independence of the country just as the Convention Peoples' Party (CPP), its mother party brought Ghana, political independence. Professor Mawusi Dake another national executive member described Nkrumahist political tradition as the only legitimate political force that can ensure the prosperity of the country.
