Coronavirus: UGSRC begins distribution of hand sanitizers to residential halls

The University of Ghana Students Representative Council is distributing hand sanitizers to various residential halls on its campus.

This comes after Ghana confirmed two cases of the novel coronavirus.

The action by the SRC, led by Isaac Agyemang, is not only aimed at protecting members of the University community from contracting the virus but preventing its spread.

Isaac Agyemang says that the hand sanitizers will be stationed at all porter’s lodges to be used by all who are entering the hall.

“As you may already know, Ghana has recorded two cases of the coronavirus. The SRC is very much concerned about the safety of persons on campus, therefore, we partnered with the University Health Service Directorate to procure and distribute these big-size sanitizers. They are to be at the porter’s lodge so that all those entering the hall can use it appropriately,” he told UniversNews.

Isaac Agyemang also disclosed that there were plans to send some of the sanitizers to the University’s satellite campuses.

“We certainly cannot leave the Korle-Bu and Accra City campuses out. They are part of the University and they must be protected as well. There are plans to reach out to them too,” he assured

The SRC president urged members of the University community to appropriately use the hand sanitizers to reduce the risk of contracting or spreading the virus.

“The sanitizers have been provided and we urge everyone to appropriately use them. Whilst they use them, they should also remember to regularly wash their hands with soap and under running water. We are actively in communication with University authorities on how to step up our preparedness to make the campus safe. If anyone is feeling unwell, they should swiftly seek medical attention,” Isaac Agyemang advised.

Meanwhile, University management has suspended all public gatherings, including church activities.

On Saturday, it announced the indefinite suspension of Interim Assessments of students.

University authorities have also allocated three bungalows to quarantine persons suspected to be infected by the virus.

It has also formed an Emergency Response Team, comprising of the University of Ghana Health Services and Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research, to help handle matters.

The University has also issued a questionnaire to members in its community to help them assess the risk of students and staff.
