The Human Right Court will today, Monday, August 31 rule on an application seeking to quash the conviction of President John Mahama’s failed assassin.

Human rights Lawyer Francis Xavier-Sosu wants the court to set aside the sentencing of Charles Antwi, who was slapped with a 10-year jail term.

The State, however, appears to be backtracking after it pushed for his sentencing following his confession. The Attorney General has filed documents seeking a review of the initial ruling.

Relations and the Ghana Mental Health Authority insist Charles Antwi is mentally unwell and requires medical attention.

Antwi was apprehended when a member of the congregation noticed his nervous and suspicious behaviour during the church service last Sunday.

According to the security source, a policeman and a member of the church escorted Antwi outside.

The loaded and cocked pistol was found following a search on him.

It was not immediately clear why he had carried the fully loaded gun into the church.

President John Dramani Mahama and his family regularly worship at the Ringway Gospel Center but were not present in church when the incident occurred.
